Watford Museum

The Watford Museum website has had a complete overhaul, with a new design, new domain name and a massive amount of new content. While the bulk of the work has now been done, the site is still expanding - two online exhibitions about Watford Football Club will be launched shortly, with more to follow.

The bright, vibrant design of the main site echoes that of the museum's new leaflet, by Nick Davidson. Further down, there are mini-sites devoted to Cassiobury House and Watford Football Club that I designed from scratch myself. Throughout, the navigation is clear, simple and consistent, with accessibility to the fore.

The result is a site that's pleasing to the eye, but is also at the heart of the active, engaging life of a local museum. News stories are posted regularly, further online exhibitions are planned for the future, and a healthy buzz surrounds it all!

Online exhibitions

As well as providing information about Watford Museum's collections and services, the new website gives the museum a much more tangible and valuable online presence. The two mini-sites about Cassiobury House and Watford Football Club are significant resources in their own right, with the former offering very high quality images of the museum's portrait collection.

These online exhibitions are intended to grow over time. There are already plans for another mini-site as part of a project on cultural diversity in the town, and for a collaboration with a local school too.

A major role will be played by a tool that I have developed, which enables visitors to the site to create pages with their own text and images for inclusion in the exhibitions. The process is simple and intuitive, and is already proving very popular on the My Brighton and Hove website, where it is also in use.

On-going support

In addition to the re-development of the whole site, I am providing support for Watford Museum as part of a strong working relationship that has evolved since my original involvement in building their first-ever exhibition website in 2002. This includes adding regular updates on what's happening at the museum - the information is e-mailed or phoned through to me as part of an on-going maintenance contract - and offering technical advice on a variety of matters, big and small.
